1. What are your thoughts on participatory art (100 words):
The G-77 sees participation as being necessary to foster community, as well as individual, growth. Socially driven structures/projects, as derived by and from artists/collab groups, help humans flourish instead of favoring the isolation and detachment that the false notion of Consumerism As Individual Expression encourages. This is not to say that The G-77 members do not work as individuals –- far from it. However, its members seek to find opportunities with which to engage the greater community and thus engage it in collaborative experimentation.
2. Describe your (collective’s) work (100 words):
As certain media become influential in the separation of person-to-person meetings, we borrow techniques of this global model (such as video surveillance) to reinforce our immediate community while fostering growth within our global community. Surveillance, as an example, becomes sousveillance and allows for local communities, from the inside, to track progressive developments that can aid the community – i.e., useful statisitcs are gathered as needed by said community. We see collaboration as an aid in our personal growth and work/ongoing projects as well as for the betterment of social systems at large, as they are mutually dependent.
3. Describe its participatory elements:
Much of our work is concerned with recording phenomenon over a passage of time. We are aware that history is not written in stone, and those who have the power often write history in ways to benefit themselves. Our projects engage in a more open and multi-perspective view of history and truth, we want to create possibilities for empowerment, for new perspectives, and for energy and power to overflow the eroded banks of conventional systems and to be available to everyone. This begins with the interpersonal practice of the G-77: our open discussions and respect for each other's opinions are our values, and we hope to pass these along to our community, as well as to share what others can teach us.
4. If applicable, was the work produced in collaboration? Please outline involvement (100 words):
The work, thus far, has been produced in collaboration. It starts with our collaborative work in the past and our website which serves to represent us as a unit. Then we began to pass ideas back and forth. The benefit that collaboration has in coming up with ideas is that the idea keeps getting refined, hybridized and perverted until it is about 10 steps past the original idea. It is something like the workings of the unconcious when you dream, your mind works on problems in a variety of ways until the solution appears. The rest of the project will also be carried out collaboratively. We will construct the exhibit together using shared/found materials and tools - also we will all write our messages for the future to be enclosed in the capsule, and will invite collaboration from the community to do the same.
